Description:
'Sing-Sings' in Papua New Guinea are held for a variety of reasons, but may be hard to find as they are most often held in remote villages, inaccessible by vehicle. A 'Sing-Sing' might be associated with paying off part of a bride price, a Moga ceremony, celebrating a particular harvest, or after clarifying a land dispute between neighboring clans. Whatever the reason, the participants will be brilliantly costumed, painted bodies, and decorated with feathers, pearls, shells and animal skins representing birds, trees, or mountain spirits, while parading, waving weapons, singing and dancing. Sometimes an important event, such as a legendary battle between enemy clans, is even enacted at these traditional musical festivals.
