Description:
Where was the new road? Was this it. Sure didn't look new with no rocks, no fallen trees lining the shoulders of the road. I really had no idea as to where I was on the map. And 30 years later looking at more recent maps, I still can't determine the route from Mt. Hagen to this "T" junction in the journey.
The narrow trail had now been replaced by this dirt road that looked like it had been there forever. It even had log bridges, funky as they were, crossing rivers and streams, minus the smaller ones which had to be waded across. For the past two weeks on the trail. I encountered maybe a dozen people a day or so, and now along this road there were many more huts, groups of people gathered on the side of the road and stragglers popping out of the jungle when it seemed like no one was around.
Not surprisingly though was there was absolutely nothing to buy. No food, no souvenirs, no signs, just a bunch of people suddenly freaked out by what was pedaling their way.
